A Rich Heritage
One of our founding churches, The First Congregational Church of Haddam (FCCH), has played an important role and is a beautiful presence in our community. Officially organized on November 15, 1700, the church now occupies its fifth meetinghouse. The fourth sanctuary, built in 1847, served the community until it was destroyed by a disastrous fire in 1979. Thanks to the support of many people both near and far, the church was rebuilt in just two short years and dedicated in 1981. The current sanctuary is an exact replica of the 1847 structure, reminding us of the church’s 300+ year legacy of worship and service.
In 2017, FCCH combined worship services, outreach, and Sunday school with our church neighbors to the north, Higganum Congregational Church. For over five years, our churches worshiped together each Sunday, rotating location by month, and shared a minister and many ministries.
On January 1, 2023 the First Congregational Church of Haddam and the Higganum Congregational Church officially merged to form the United Congregational Church of Haddam and Higganum (UCCHH)! We retain both church campuses for now, calling one the Haddam (or South) Campus and the other the Higganum (or North) Campus. Our choir numbers over twenty-five on most Sundays and sounds fabulous under the direction of Joel Spineti and organist, Kevin Dodd. Our Christian Education and Faith Formation Director, Amy Harlow, leads the Sunday school program. The Outreach Committee plans over twenty outreach opportunities each year.
This is an exciting time for both of our congregations as we come together to become one. Our journey may not always be easy but we look forward to it with open hearts!
Interested in getting involved?
One of the great things about congregational churches is the fact that members are the governing body of the church. We elect officers and committees to work with our staff in implementing our many ministries. These ministries include:
- Christian Education (children, youth, and adults)
- Outreach/Missions (adult outreach, mission, fellowship)
- Music ministry
- The “Bread for Heat” ministry (supports the Haddam Emergency Fuel Bank)
- Fundraising to support the work of UCCHH
